JOB DESCRIPTION:

West Coast Code Consultants, Inc. (WC³) is seeking qualified candidates for a combination role of Sr. Building Inspector and Plans Examiner. This position provides the opportunity to perform building inspections and plan review services for WC³’s jurisdictional clients while supporting safety standards and encouraging innovative design and construction solutions. Responsibilities include performing combination inspections or reviewing drawings and other construction documents for residential, commercial, and industrial projects to ensure compliance with applicable laws, building codes, referenced design standards, and requirements. The role also involves both oral and written communication with clients, applicants, and internal staff. Candidates are encouraged to pursue regular ongoing industry training and earn relevant International Code Council (ICC) certifications for inspectors and plans examiners.

This position is looking to be filled from our Southern California Regional Office in Oceanside, California.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Perform all necessary duties of a certified Building Inspector to determine code compliance adopted by various jurisdictions.
  • Perform year-round field inspections of new and existing commercial, industrial, and residential properties for conformance to codes, regulations, plans, specifications, and standards related to foundations, framing, electrical, mechanical, plumbing, housing, access, fire, life safety, and other functional elements.
  • Perform evaluations of buildings, multi-family dwellings, schools, and structures at various construction stages for compliance with approved plans, specifications, jurisdictional codes, ordinances, and other regulations.
  • Comprehensive code knowledge required to inspect architectural, structural, electrical, mechanical, and plumbing aspects of construction.
  • Write inspection reports, both paper copies and electronically, with laptops and tablets.
  • Communicate effectively with the public (homeowners, property owners, engineers, architects, etc.) to answer questions that may arise and communicate deficiencies. with owners and builders.
  • Communicate with permit techs, other inspectors, and building officials for jurisdictions. Adapt to the jurisdiction’s requirements of reporting and communicating.
  • Inspections may require physical exertion during on-site inspections, such as sitting, crawling, standing, walking, jumping, and lifting. Work may be performed outdoors in the elements.
  • Perform complete and timely plan reviews of both simple and complex residential, commercial, and industrial projects. Review of construction documents to determine compliance with building codes and regulations.
  • Performs non-structural plan checking for completeness, accuracy, and code compliance for new construction, alterations, or remodeling for existing structures; ensures compliance with pertinent codes and accepted engineering practices.
  • Assembles letters of deficiency referencing the pertinent code from code books. Communicate with project owners and design teams about deficiencies and solutions.
  • Keeps accurate records and logs of plan review status and completion of projects, ensuring plan review processes remain timely within the established expectations for turnaround and client service.
  • Plan review work will be completed in an office setting, sitting or standing for extended periods at a computer.
  • Make special efforts to promote goodwill within the company and perform other related duties as assigned.
  • May serve in-house within client jurisdictions, working in all activities of the Building Division, including building permit processing and record keeping, day-to-day coordination of field inspection schedules, inspections of buildings and structures in all stages of construction, review of construction plans and specifications for compliance with building codes, and code enforcement.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • A minimum of three (3) to five (5) years of experience performing building inspections and/or plan reviews.
  • Basic knowledge of electronics, Microsoft Office Suite, and Bluebeam software is preferred.
  • Must possess proficient writing, oral, and communication skills.
  • Must possess a driver’s license and can drive.
  • Obtain and update state and local licenses and certifications as needed.
  • Preferred – At least eight (8) ICC certifications and be a certified combination inspector for both commercial and residential in Building, Mechanical, Plumbing, and Electrical disciplines.
  • Preferred – ICC Building Plans Examiner certification.

SALARY:

  • $83K – $104K / Annually, depending upon experience.
